The lack of support for 
__file__
is a non-starter. I am floored by all the great work indygreg has kicked out, but this ticket is denying reality: https://github.com/indygreg/PyOxidizer/issues/69 I expect you might get a similar opinion to mine from the Pip folks.

If nothing else, it can be a forcing function to just have the "standard" remove the optional-ibility of 
__file__
But also, IMO something owned by the PSF should probably adhere to their own restrictions 🙂

The PyPA is pretty much not the PSF in another accepting reality binge. They even have their own PEP sub-genre semi-officially that they acknowledge.

Basically, they have the crappiest job in the PSF, they have to deal with the arguably biggest missing feature of Python, packaging and consumption.

You might be of the age to have been exposed to Choose Your Own Adventure books? I think that's the sub-genre, but with all choices except the exact right ones getting you anything but death.

I freaking loved those books. I read every ending. Followed all the paths. They always had several dud endings that made me question the whole concept. But I still needed to know the entire universe of possibilities.

I liked them a little bit, but I greatly preferred just reading regular books
"If you want to resurrect the Jesus-allegory lion, go to page 85. If you want to plunge Narnia into never-ending darkness go to page 92". It doesn't really work.
