Well there's good news and bad news. Both of which are that this seems to be a problem with just my setup, using ASDF in wsl2 on a work computer... since I don't have slack there, I spun up a Codespace on my ipad to generate the errors to copy here and it works just fine. So my guess is that there's something weird with the PATH on my work machine that's causing all these issues.
