since it's fixed on master i would only want to use another PR to add testing and/or the binary/text encoding methods i mentioned, and i still don't understand why this happened nondeterministically before the fix (unless the nailgun connection can be exited by either side of the call -- if that is true then this makes sense. i think this is true but need to dig a bit to find it)
