i mentioned that i didn't change anything above $HOME, nor any shell startup scripts, because i didn't hack anything together for c/c++, and only modified the environment that setup.py was invoked in. i didn't once use any compiler that already existed in the system. with that in mind,

rm -rf ~/.cache/pants && git clean -xfd && git checkout -- . && ./pants goals

should work -- but it doesn't. all the appropriate symbols exist in

libnative_engine_ffi.a

, the linker args are correct, but the output shared object is wrong, and it's hard to invoke the linker manually because it uses temporary object files. i tried compiling rustc from source and commenting out the sections that strip symbols on osx, and it was definitely using the built compiler, but even with that, the output dylib still didn't contain the right symbols (it's unclear that symbol stripping was at fault, though). the last time

/usr/bin/ld

was modified was on jan 19, apparently, long before this ever happened.
