got it. have been building out an R pipeline for fun this weekend so haven't investigated too much -- the pantsbuild/pants checkout on this laptop is still fine and the toolchain i made for osx works on linux to compile python dists with the same shell script to check out/build the toolchain, so not a blocking issue
