i was able to repro a hang on my linux machine when running

./pants --enable-pantsd list tests/python/pants_test/base:

which i traced back conclusively to

ec931f87a5377e73ab0d0838fde1d4965fa8fc66

. was gaslighting myself that my changes were breaking it for far too long today. going to check it out more
