goes away on a system reboot, and I assume the same is true on a mac

You can not rely on this - it is not guareteed by the system
and is certainly not true for all linux distributions

that's a good point, it's not guaranteed. in practice I think most linux distributions do implement /tmp as a tmpfs mount, but yeah we shouldn't assume that's the case
