the pants options system as implemented gets a lot of things right that makes me very concerned about attempts at re-architecting it (which is why you'll see i only have one attempt to re-architect it, my least recent open PR). i don't know anything that i would say it gets wrong except for the

fingerprint=False

thing. it's also something that could and i would say should be extracted into its own standalone library (@curved-vase-73456 asked about thsi), which is something else i also want to do at some point.
