He wasn’t strongly opposed to materialize, but encouraged us to consider either “write” or “save” because “materialize” was a bit esoteric (which he pointed out might be from English not being first language). Generally, I do think we should try to bias towards simpler words, but I’m not sure if there’s a meaningful semantic difference here.
