The version selection dropdown in the docs has become unwieldy, so I'll hide (but not delete) some of those versions. Can always restore them if people prefer.

We should probably also deprecate 2.7

There’s no policy in place that “automatically” deprecates x stable releases older than the current stable?
Also, what are the implications of deprecating a release, besides that pill in the docs menu?
h
Basically just that 🙂

It informally communicates that we don't backport bugfixes I guess

oh! how did you do that? i had looked before but not seen it
hm: note that the most obvious way to potentially do this breaks old links…
h
There's a config option to hide versions
Does that also hide all the pages for that version?
w
last i checked it made the URLs inaccessible
h
I mean we break default-version links all the time, but breaking version-specific links isn't great
w
right. because we pin them in older versions.
h
We can file that with readme.com as feature request
Hide from the menu but don't hide the underlying links

In the meantime, should we revert this change? (I think it's safe to still use for the V1 versions because I don't think we had that doc URL helper function yet.)
w
yea, i think so. if you’re logged out and/or in a private window, hidden versions are 404s

(last i checked)
h
Realistically though, we can't maintain old docs versions in perpetuity
w
why not?
(aside from the dropdown)
h
The dropdown is mostly what I meant
w
sure: agree on filing a bug there.
h
We can leave old docs lying around to not break links but I'm not sure we're required to
w
imo, it’s the least we can do to not abandon folks who fall behind. particularly since we suggest upgrading through each version

I strongly agree with Stu. It makes sense to hide from the drop-down, but I think it is important when you change the URL to 2.2 etc that things work like normal
w
While that menu is being worked on, I have a slight request - can it be made to be descending, rather than asc? Mitigates the problem of having too many old docs cluttering up, as I'd wager new or active Pants users are somewhat up-to-date, so would always be near the top of the dropdown Edit: I say this as someone who has projects on 3 recent-ish versions of Pants, so I'm being completely selfish 😈

I don't think we have control over that unfortunately
