Is it possible to assign the generated value from  the `vcs_version` target to the `version` property when producing a `python_artifact` ( `python_distribution`  ) without hand coding a setup.py?

You might have to write a plugin. I am not aware of in-built pants functionality that supports it

this is a missing feature I think <@U051221NF> at least made a mental note of a while back..

It wouldn't be terribly hard to add if you want to take a crack at it
