Hi folks. Is there a reason why pants uses
~/.cache
for caching, and not the platform cache dir like
nce
does? For Linux, this doesn't matter, but on MacOS, the platform cache dir is
~/Library/Caches
, so the nce cache is there, but the pants cache is in
~/.cache
w
I wasn't around when it was decided, but I don't know if there is any particular reason - other than that's where it typically ends up on Linux - and a lot of other tools use it. e.g. On my mac, I have
gh
,
node
,
nvim
,
pants
,
puppeteer
all using that directory by default (while about a 20 other non-Apple ones use ~/Library/Caches) Here is some recent history about the cache location: https://github.com/pantsbuild/scie-pants/issues/283 One concern/annoyance is that there is a lot of workflow built around that basically hardcoded directory, so if it was updated - there would be breakages in people’s workflows. I think when Pants has some decent cache management setup - that would be a safer time to change to the standard

Okay, I don't think it's super problematic, just wondering what the reasoning is.
