TIL Anaconda isn't free anymore. I used it for a weekend many years ago, and found it more convoluted (and system breaking) than just installing vanilla python - and I've never touched it since https://www.theregister.com/2024/08/08/anaconda_puts_the_squeeze_on/

They reached out to us the other day... I ripped out conda from all repositories a few years ago, but some people still use it to manage venvs. So we're on the hook for $XX just for
python -m venv

As far as I could understand their usage, yeah. I kept poking so we could address any workflow concerns but that was the thing everyone focused on.
I think for data scientists it's very ingrained since for a long while it was the only way to access some tools and/or get the best performance...

yeah it was a good way of getting compiled things for windows without having to fight through MSVC
