Are you using CMake + pants to generate your makefiles, or was that already done outside of Pants? That could affect the errors you're seeing. If you have already generated your make/ninja (or whatever) files, then you'll need to inspect your key expected env variables, and make sure those are inside your pants environment (because Pants will wipe almost everything out internally)
