The general reasons for precompiling any python source at all were speed (https://github.com/pantsbuild/pex/issues/14) and a problem I'm not paging back in all that quickly here on my phone (https://github.com/pantsbuild/pex/issues/127 https://github.com/pantsbuild/pants/issues/1658).
