I dunno, I'm still kind of liking my earlier proposal. The "aggressive" stable branch has pre-releases and RCs, and unless there are backwards incompatible changes introduced, it continues to pump out one patch version release per RC cycle. The "conservative" stable branch only consumes individual patches (as you're suggesting) for backporting bugfixes. On a ~3 month cadence, the aggressive branch becomes conservative, and the conservative gets frozen.
