hey, so i had initially discussed waiting for the c/c++ changes before cutting the 1.8.x release, but we've decided there is likely enough in 1.7.x already... so we'll wait until 1.8.x has been cut for at least a week before landing https://github.com/pantsbuild/pants/pull/5815
