Well, I can probably debug it but it's likely irrelevant to what I need to do. Mostly just thinking about getting a cloud VM with whatever is the least painful environment. E.g. right now some pip bootstrap fails with an error message that's swallowed into a log file that is deleted by the time the error is reported, and it's just...uuuugh.
