OK, answer seems to be “use the pytest-pythonpath plugin to explicitly add ./src/python to the pythonpath” which of course has all sorts of other consequences

can you use pytest-pythonpath plugin add

.pants.d/…/chroot/src/python…

instead of

<source root>/src/python

?
