Thanks @high-advantage-47550 @full-kilobyte-93429 it occured to me after I got home last night that might be the case and confirmed it this morning by moving the repo out of my home dir. Adding

[compile.zinc] 
args: [
    '-S-Xmax-classfile-name', '-S128'
      ]

also did the trick.
