it's not clear to me that that was ever intentionally supported, because python targets have supported having

dependencies

on

resources

targets for ~forever

I think you're right that support was not intentional, but given that we don't try to reject sources in any language that I can tell, this works for all that support resources in the runtime I think. IE: pretty sure same works unintentionally today for jvm too.

But we still end up doing filtering based on extensions there
