Are there any discuss on change the name Pants 2 to another name? Poetry v.s. Pants, which one would you pick if you do not know about the tech details?
b
I think there's been, and always will be hallway conversations about it. I personally doubt any of them will make their way into anything substantial. Why do you ask?
c
there’s way more fun to be had with the pants name than poetry 😜
b
Because my tech leader just created project using Poetry. And I'm joking on the name of Poetry and Pants.
Pants is not a good name for branding. In British or in Japanese, there is a bad meaning of pants.
c
“what would you rather be without if you had to pick one: pants or poetry?” 😉
b
In Japanese anime, man who love Pants(胖次)is hentai!
c
oh, in Japanese as well?
wow 😄
b
I guess. I do not know much about Japanese. In Chinese, when we translate a word in English, we tend to translate the meaning. But in Japanese, they tend to keep the sound.
c
yea, Japanese is fun like that, with their on-yomi and kun-yomi, right (unsure if I got those right, now though.. 😬 )
b
In this manga, there is an old man who is a hentai loves Pants and steals Pants.

I suggest that an Esperanto name should be picked for renaming Pants 2. There are less ambiguity in Esperanto.
w
Panteranto?
b
I suggest that rename
Pants 2
to
Panta
.Because in Epseranto it is
Pantalono
, we can take the first five letters
panta
. From
Pants
to
Panta
, is not a big change! But it is a good change. Because Panta is easier to prounounce for more people. Vowel sounds better then
ts
.
e
Is this all a joke? Why does this matter?
c
actually,
panta
in Swedish is.. not great/weird. (it’s the verb when you recycle your cans/bottles) (also noting I’m not in favour of a rename..)
a
As a Brit, I have to say I find the name vaguely amusing, though it's hard to Google. It's not a bad word, just a childish one 🙂 I emit a Beavis and Butthead chuckle every time I type
pants peek
, and I'm pretty sure I saw an option in the docs somewhere for "expose_python".
b
Pants is indeed hard to Google. A unique name would make it easier to hone in on info. We tried to help the disambiguation situation by extending the brand to include Pantsbuild, but that didn't catch on. Everyone continues to call it Pants, including for the most part us. So the search ambiguity persists.

Yes, SEO is very important!
c
we need to post more screenshots. googling
python pants
gives proper hits for the top #5 entries, but the images are… not 😛
b
I would love some compelling up-to-date screenshots for the home page. Submissions welcome.

https://www.internationalwomensday.com/ What if the ME TOO campaign wants to cancel the name
Pants
? Just like the
master -> main
change. Well, Pants might not be famous enough to be
cancel
ed. IMHO, re-branding is better than waiting to be
cancel
ed .

Sounds like Pascal's Wager to me. Pretty cowardly motivation.

I think this conversation is going off the rails a bit. It went from re-naming due to maybe not being technically precise, to potentially poor translation/implications in other countries, to Esperanto, to actioning in advance of hypothetically getting cancelled some day in the future. I don’t think there is any serious need or desire to re-brand Pants at the moment (though someone may correct me if I’m wrong). The SEO concerns brought up are a thing, and this leads me to usually preface my searches with “pantsbuild question” or “python pants myquestion”, but 🤷 - but this isn’t the only tool I need to specify a domain while searching. Ever try searching “Clean” or “SOLID” without “architecture”? Brutal. I think poor translations or connotations in another locale are unfortunate, but also 🤷 - its a problem that plagues billion dollar companies, as much as open-source projects - especially with short names. It can also be a moving target, as different locales change slang over time. That’s not to say that we should go out of our way to come up with intentionally graphic, hateful, or offensive naming, obviously
