hey all— new to Pants and evaluating POC/test out migrating a bunch of java services to a monorepo with Pants or Bazel. Our CI and lower env/prod machines are all linux. Unfortunately my dev machine is an intel mac (which lost support), and I’m not at all familiar with Pants, so would love your advice on the right way to test out Pants / set up a new project: 1. Run pants 2.31 from inside of a linux docker locally? Use environment setup to distinguish between local-docker and pants-docker when run in non-local envs? 2. Compile pants 2.30 from source using the deprecated ./pants.sh script?
or maybe there’s something that allows easy install of older pants version on local machine?

https://github.com/pantsbuild/scie-pants/releases/tag/v0.12.5 First step would be to grab this guy (last scie-pants runner for Intel Mac), and then I think the last one it works with is 2.30.x or thereabouts? That should be a good start natively. After that, using a local docker/podman container is an option, or compiling Pants from source - either should be fine if you want the latest
I have a sample branch for using cargo-zig which might make it in sometime, where we could try building (but not testing) a release or something

thank you!

The latest scie-pants has 2.32.x support, but it also dropped intel mac. I think 2.31.x of Pants might have dropped intel mac support too. I build from source on my old intel mac, FWIW
So,
git clone git@github.com:pantsbuild/pants
Then
MODE=debug pants --version
to compile (you need
protoc
on your path, and rustup) Then from my repo of interest:
PANTS_SOURCE=../wherever-pants-is pants --version
