Hi folks, we have a fairly vanilla repo and want to enable ruff per https://www.pantsbuild.org/stable/docs/python/overview/linters-and-formatters but it seems that
pants.backend.experimental.python.lint.ruff.check
or
pants.backend.experimental.python.lint.ruff.format
is not available.
Copy code
% pants help backends | rg ruff
[ ] pants.backend.build_files.fmt.ruff                                        [pants]
% pants --version
2.30.0
Did I miss anything, or were the ruff backends not packaged / published?

ah figured it out. they are in experimental, thus need help-advanced to show them:
Copy code
% pants help-advanced backends | rg ruff
[ ] pants.backend.build_files.fmt.ruff                                        [pants]
[*] pants.backend.experimental.python.lint.ruff.check                         [pants]
     <https://docs.astral.sh/ruff/>
[*] pants.backend.experimental.python.lint.ruff.format                        [pants]
     <https://docs.astral.sh/ruff/>
[ ] pants.backend.experimental.tools.trufflehog                               [pants]
     Registers trufflehog rules.

Hmm, that's silly - experimental backends themselves shouldn't be carved off under "advanced"
w
Looks like that was intentional - https://github.com/pantsbuild/pants/pull/18867
w
Yeah, I remember the change. However, a couple of years later, I think it's silly. The concept of "experimental" has drifted since then I think, so some of the backends have more stability than the name would suggest

cc @curved-television-6568 (not urgent) whether we should revisit this.
