Just wondering if there were any plans for native windows binary, we are currently evaluting moving to pantsbuild but this seems like a pretty big non-starter for a large org with a large set of development environments.

We want this to happen, there has been movement towards it particularly in
pex
, which is a prerequisite. However this effort has been repeatedly stalled by lack of resources. The current group of Pants contributors and maintainers aren’t Windows users and don’t represent orgs that have that as a requirement. So it has not been high priority for that group. Obviously there is selection bias at work there… The way to get this going would be for an org with sufficient interest in it to either do, or sponsor, the work. But of course that presents a chicken-and-egg problem, as such an org would have to already be using and enjoying Pants enough to justify the effort. So…
I do wonder if this is a good candidate for crowdfunding. I have heard of such things for OSS projects recently. So a few large orgs could informally band together via such a mechanism to fund the work.

do you have any estimate of what that sort of effort would require from a cost perspective?

Sorry for the delay in circling back on this. I don’t really know with precision, but I’d estimate one person’s majority-time work for 4-6 months, which at today’s compensation rates for software engineers is in the area of $90k-$150k, give or take.
