Hello, I'm a Python developer for Westell, and I primarily develop small IoT-ish applications that monitor small, unmanned sites for large infrastructure companies (e.g. Verizon Wireless cell tower sites). We are refactoring our code base from a monolithic approach into more of a monorepo/microservices structure. It looks like Pants will definitely be a great tool to -- at the very least -- help with linting/checking and testing. We do have a very unique build process for our packages because they need to run on our custom embedded platform, and there are very specific requirements. I will be investigating the Plugin API to see if we can create something that will allow us to build packages "our way", but it certainly looks like the tools are there. A couple notes on our specifics -- our packages are bundled using opkg, and some will include web apps created using Node.js.

We’ve been on the search for a good build system for mono repos, specifically for some of our python mono repos. We landed on pants and it felt quite natural and straight forward to use.

Hi, I am a Tech lead at cami.ai . We are developing a customer success platform that provides scalable customer love to our customers. We were looking for a monorepo build system to manage our ELT pipelines which are in python. I was looking at good build systems that allow us to build, deploy and test each of the tasks in our pipeline separately. Landed in Pants after extensive searching and seems like the best tool so far. Has anyone in this community used pants for deploying ELT pipelines? Specifically we are planning to use pants to package ELT jobs which will populate our delta lakehouse.

Hello team! I am an engineering manager for a crypto exchange in Australia called Swyftx. I use Typescript for basically everything at the moment because that's what Swyftx uses. but my preferred ecosystem Is Go, stumbled upon Pants when trying to find any Go tools that could support Typescript too for a side project. I really liked how I could use Pants for Go but wished I could use it for Typescript too

Hello everyone. Sorry for the delayed response. I'm Alireza Roshanzamir, software engineer and QA technical lead at a company called Mahsan. Some of the activities that my team does include: - Developing system/acceptance/deployment test framework using Python. - Research and development of practices and tools for requirement engineering and traceability. - Developing generic infrastructure management application to support creation/deletion, logical/physical resource management, and unique interface protocol for each environment (such as development, test, and production) of company products. - Providing system/acceptance/deployment test best practices. - Defining QA metrics and developing some tools for automatic measuring. - Providing Jenkins CI infrastructure and best practices for all the teams. - Providing the necessary training to achieve high-quality code/programmer/architecture. We are deciding to make our company Pythons' projects Pants compatible. The main reason for this migration is to avoid too many files and tools when developing code and managing the interdependence between projects: 1. Tox (tox.ini) for virtual environment manipulation, clean task execution, and multi-python version testing. 2. Many requirements.in (installation, development, type-check, format, ...) in editable/non-editable versions. They install first-party dependencies using the flags for relative Python projects and requirements.txt installation (which has an inconsistent relative path resolution between relative requirements.in and relative Python project). 3. Setuptools (setup.py) for packaging which reads one of the requirements.in files for preventing duplication. 4. Makefile for some virtual environment independent tasks and a single-point-of-entry for task running. Also, automatic installation of non-Python dependencies (such as Docker images) is handled using Makefiles. 5. Flake8, isort, mypy, and pytest tools and corresponding config files. However, the config files can be put in a single file (such as tox.ini). 6. Lock files and Pip-tools for dependency pinning. 7. There is also a Makefile at the root of the repository to run tasks in parallel on projects that support them. 8. Some other files and tools (such as Twine, Jenkins/Jenkinsfile, MANIFEST.in, sphinx-build, etc). For novice developers, there are many tools and flows to learn for starting development. So, we decided to minimize and integrate these numerous technologies and internal practices. I find the Pants by googling "python monorepo". Sorry for the long description 🙂

is that adding dozens of BUILD files containing mysterious macros not explained in the Getting Started may not be the best start so I’m trying to set up this repo in a more incremental and manual way: try to build and test just one subproject.

I clued into Pants when it was mentioned by a coworker and then found out more from the Python.init podcast and some of @happy-kitchen-89482’s YouTubes. I tend to learn about things like this first via audio while I’m doing house and farm chores, so thanks for these recorded introductions that got me interested.

Hi all! I'm Dimitrios and I'm responsible together with a few other colleagues for a large python-based software package developed and used within Bosch and subsidiaries. Some time ago we switched from setuptools to poetry, mainly to allow pinning the dependencies for developers and making everone's life easier. We discovered and are now looking into pants because we plan to create multiple modular packages in a monorepo instead of one monolithic package. Also, the fine grained caching of builds is a big advantage and has worked for us, reducing a full test run of ~15 min to typically below 3 min. However, there are still some details to iron out, for which we have not been able to find the solutions. I'll write the exact circumstances and problems we encountered in the #general channel.
