    Just based on the structure of the projects that have them, it seems like it's equivalent to 
    jar
    in packaging and implicitly adding 
    test
    as a classifier

    Adding in <type>test-jar</type> tells it that you need the separate jar file for tests. Now let me look in our nexus to answer your classifier question

    Yeah, and in our situation that almost universally means that we can just throw away the test scope
