hello!
i'm trying to upgrade from `com.google.protobuf` version `2.6.1` to version `3.1.0`
it builds fine, but at runtime, i get a `NoSuchMethodError`

it looks like it's a classpath issue (we use Spark/Hadoop, and that uses a different version of protobuf)
we already shade `com.google.protobuf`, and i've tried excluding `com.google.protobuf` from the JVM binary
the Ivy dependency report doesn't complain about evictions either
i *think* Spark/Hadoop's protobuf version must be getting picked up on the classpath

any ideas on what to try next?

so the class you are getting `NoSuchMethodError` from must have more than one version, can confirm by examining the jars on the classpath

once that's confirmed, use exclude and switch to the newer version <@U4UBFRV18> ^

you could also consider shading your binary

which would rewrite all of your references to protobuf to not collide with hadoop's own references

...oh "we already shade"... hm. that would imply that the wrong things are shaded maybe?

should look inside the resulting binary to see what the final classes look like.

<@U1R0P5TFY> : you'll likely need to patch pants to fix that, or open a github issue at least. i was asking about what filesystem you're on... probably something in docker?

i think it shortens the maximum path length

either way, it's probably still a bug in pants. we should shorten those names.

I think it is the encrypfs that blows up the file name length
