    wow, congrats! I would say yes, that is probably 4 upgrades a year or so? It is a big space, there are generally bug fixes that you would want. Anecdotally, I can tell you that shops that don't upgrade regularly struggle when they finally decide to pull the trigger. If you generally consume the stable releases, you get the benefit of community experience if you encounter any trouble spots.

    that will walk through the (python) external dependencies? ie to show that

    as it stands, both of those are things that would be implemented in pex. i'm not sure they exist; but if they did, they're not exposed in pants, afaik

    for depmap, currently pants won’t delve into transitive requirements etc - but it’d be nice to have that level of detail.

    and I’m not aware of a general exclusion model for python resolution. pep440 covers some weird exclusions clause support, but I’m guessing that’s probably not what you’re looking for. https://www.python.org/dev/peps/pep-0440

    transitive pinning as in, you start by depending on 
    3rdparty/python:a
    (defined as 
    a==1.0.0
    ) which transitively depends on 
    b>2.0
    - so to pin that to a specific version you depend on dependencies=[
    3rdparty/python:a
    (
    a==1.0.0
    ), 
    3rdparty/python:b
    (
    b==2.0.3
    )]
