yea, sec. it's during a particular `pip install`

ah, might be `cryptography` via `requests[security]`

(a `pip install` to confirm that packages generated by the release are installable)

...so, thinking about it more. i think that even if i override this within this validation script, it might fail for people trying to `pip install` pants

I wouldn’t override any LDFLAGS if you can help it

afaict cryptography has OSX wheels on pypi so it shouldn’t need to compile anything

is there a log somewhre or is this happening locally

might also be able to confirm with `build-support/bin/release.sh -n`

ideally all transitive deps of `requests[security]` are getting resolved as wheels via pypi.. if not, then compilation would happen where those header files will be needed
