Are you testing this on OSX? I nuked the local and ~/.cache but that command still fails for me on OSX when compiling the egg in the release.sh process. This was from an entirely fresh clone.

yeah, C compiler env will come into play on linux most likely until pex supports manylinux

maybe we should consider mirroring both osx + manylinux wheels to a binary store and adjusting the venv setup to resolve against that.. thats essentially what we do internally
