what is the compromise position, deleting the realpath?

(it's not clear to me that changing the behaviour of safe_mkdir is a great idea)

I can implement that but that still leaves safe_mkdir bugged in the same way

which is why I suggested just delete the realpath in the cases where it matters

right now it deletes the symlink and creates a realdir

the ticket grew a bit too large to actually follow what you were suggesting =(
